Here’s what Helen wrote
“It is my first time to choose guest house for my vacation. To be honest I am bit anxious. However, it turned out that all my worries are not necessary when we arrived at 88place. We immediately fallen love with the beautiful and exquisite garden, cozy bedroom and the warm smiles of Craig and his team. Craig is very considerate person. He brought us many little but sweet surprises: songs of my son's most favorite star during dinner time, barbecue, a hot black tea for uncomfortable stomach ...... In a word, Craig did everything to make us feel like at home or even better. I would say Craig and his 88place added many precious memories of our vacation in Chiang Mai. I would strongly suggest to choose 88place when you visit Chiang Mai.
88 Place – Designer villa with a heart
Being in a villa is an experience, different to your stock standard hotels. And Craig Parkin, the owner of the unique and extravagant 88 Place and one of the loveliest people I’ve met in my travels, has gone out of his way to ensure that your experience is everything you want it to be. As we came into exotic Chiang Mai, we were warmly greeted before we even stepped into his palatial abode – Craig stood by the road and waved us in. “I want you to feel just like you’re home,” he said as he showed us around the property. “I really dislike how when you get the bill from a hotel sometimes you go into shock! So, take anything you want and eat everything you can, and I promise it doesn’t burn too big a hole in your pocket. You are here in the villa as my guest”. And that was true – 88 Place has world-class food, quirky designer setting and a comfortable stay and absorbing you into Chiang Mai so that when you leave you are wanting to go back for more. So good that Chinese celebrity Sa Ding Ding welled up in tears before leaving!
88 Place is tucked away on a riverbank conveniently off from the main tourist hub but still just 10-minutes from the Chiang Mai city centre. It is located in a spot that is not far from the heart, but enough to escape the crazy traffic and maddening crowds. It is located along the Ping River overlooking the golden pagodas of Wat Koh Klang (temple), giving extra assurance that you’re in for a truly tranquil retreat. Far from being surrounded by backpackers and loud bars, this side of the river for this rapidly growing city is maintaining its culture and sophistication as a top priority.
This 6-bedroom villa is a true undiscovered gem. For one, the food is the best I’ve had in town. Tien, who doubles up as the chef and villa manager, whips up a mean chicken or pork noodle soup. So good, I had to have it twice in a day! We also tried the dinner set which was to die for: word of advice - you’ll be more than full, so go light during lunch.
As you walk through the villa, you’ll find that 88 Place is a love project, not one that was done for investment purposes. Every single detail is well thought about. Craig has created little ‘hangout’ spots everywhere – so you could choose between sitting and relaxing on the marble table near the talking parrots (yes, the villa has two talking parrots!) or on the outdoor rocking chairs. He’s even set the mood each evening with surround sound music, fairy lights on the trees and the reflective light covers on the roof. Dinner can equally be organised on the rooftop if you so desire.
Each room oozes with its own signature style, with art adorning the walls, bathrooms immaculately fitted, and even a games room complete with pool table, dart board, and black designer couches. If you’re a tea connoisseur, then you’d love 88 Place – Craig is one too so he has a collection of tea leaves from various parts of the world. He even has an area dedicated to making tea! The bar in the Apple TV lounge even serves what has been known to some as the best coffee in Chiang Mai.
Should we also mention how remarkable (and convenient) it is that 88 Place has its very own lift? Yes, you heard that right. If you’re travelling with children or older folk, then the lift comes in handy for getting to the upper floors. It leads you to the bedrooms on the second floor – all equally as well-decorated as the next and all promising a good night’s slumber.
Craig also specifically only hires and trains refugees from Myanmar as his top-class service staff, with smiles even warmer than the noodle soup!
88 Place is a rare find in Chiang Mai. If you’re looking at being close to the action yet wanting a private, secluded and tranquil retreat then 88 Place should be on your list. All of the tours are still just a stone’s throw away to get out to jungle and converse with the elephants, and drivers are easily arranged. Or perhaps indulge in some authentic Thai cooking? Chiang Mai has plenty to offer if you can tear yourself away from the pool overlooking the river… but that’s the good part of making it a hard decision of whether or not to leave when staying in a luxury villa.
